Whether you have a preference for roughing it on a rugged camping adventure or being pampered in a cosy yurt during a luxurious glamping trip, some of the best things about camping is the simple and free things, such as getting away from the stresses of everyday life and enjoying this country’s beautiful landscape.
Just because camping can be cheaper than a traditional holiday, doesn’t mean that camping doesn’t sometimes come at a cost - not only to your wallet but to the planet, too. Thankfully, there are a few straightforward things we can all do to reduce the environmental cost and make camping a more eco-friendly and sustainable experience. In many cases, these changes will even help you to save you money!
Go to a campsite that is ‘eco’
Nowadays, nearly all campsites take the climate into account. Waste is usually separated, and campsites are increasingly taking measures to conserve both water and energy, such as water-saving showers and energy-efficient lighting. A large number of solar panels are being fitted to generate sustainable energy, and eco-friendly materials and energy-conscious designs are often chosen for new constructions.
Don’t leave anything behind on the site
Sustainable camping also means treating your surroundings with the utmost respect. With this in mind, you should leave your pitch as tidy as possible. That not only applies to normal campsites but also if you’re camping wild in the countryside. In many countries in Europe such as Scotland and Norway, you can camp in the wild for free. This is provided you leave the pitch exactly as it was when you arrive, without any waste or damage. This unspoken general rule seems to be ‘leave no trace’. That means besides clearing up your waste, you respect the countryside, without disturbing animals or damaging and wildlife. This is very much what sustainable camping means.
Be mindful of how you use the resources available to you. It may seem insignificant, but every little helps, even if it’s just trying to decrease the amount of time you spend in the shower on site or make use of solar chargers for your electronic devices. And how about when going on a hike or a daytrip, using regional specialities from the local market rather than using your gas or electric camping grill?
