Whether you’re taking on a home or garden renovation project, you will inevitably generate a lot of waste. Effectively managing this waste can be difficult and when you’ve already spent a lot of money on the project, the last thing you want to do is fork out even more in order to remove the waste from your property. Home and garden renovations are always expensive, so reducing costs where you can is a top priority, and when it comes to waste removal, it pays to think ahead. Before you even begin the project, you should consider your renovation plan carefully and look to a professional waste removal service for advice.

As waste removal specialists, we’ve come up with three cost-effective waste removal solutions to deal with the waste your home improvement project produces. All have three important benefits each, so if you’ve got a project coming up and you want to remove your waste from your property responsibly and at a decent price, you should consider these options.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Along with professional waste removal services, there are some courses of action you can take yourself. Following the 3R’s - reducing, reusing and recycling - is a brilliant way to dispose of your waste throughout and once your project is finished.

The best way to start is to make a plan and work out exactly what you need so that you minimise the amount of waste generated. We appreciate that improvement projects never quite go completely to plan, but if you try to reduce the amount of material you use, it’ll save you money in the long run.

Reusing your materials is another way to reduce the waste produced. If any of the materials or items are reusable, why not give them away to friends or family who are taking on a project soon? What you may see as trash could be somebody else’s treasure, so let people know when you have building materials to spare.

Similarly, you could repurpose some items for alternative uses. For example, if you take down a wall in the garden you could use the bricks as paving stones in another area. Or, if you take down interior walls, you could repurpose the timber into something else, like an item of furniture.

If something really is unusable, be sure to recycle as much as you can by taking it to your local waste recycling centre. It will take a bit of time to sort through your waste and work out what can be recycled, but you’ll have a clear conscience afterwards. Reducing, reusing and recycling takes time and research, but the benefits are significant, both for you and for those around you:

  1. Better for the environment. By abiding by the 3R’s, you’ll end up using fewer materials and what you do use won’t end up in landfill. The chemicals and gasses released from degrading rubbish in landfill is very harmful to the environment, so anything that is recycled rather than thrown away reduces the pollution caused by waste.

  1. Saves money. Even if you’re not a hardcore eco-warrior, consider how much money you might save by reducing, reusing and recycling. If you make a careful plan, you won’t buy unnecessary excess materials. Equally, if you manage to repurpose or sell on the things that you don’t use, you could even make your money back!

  1. Sustainable. As well as the obvious environmental benefits, following the 3R’s is a great waste disposal solution that benefits the community around you. By circulating items for reuse, you enable people to take on their own renovation projects that they may not have been able to afford had they needed to buy brand new materials.

Although this is a brilliant solution that has countless benefits, it’s not necessarily ideal for a larger scale project. In this instance, the professional services of an expert waste disposal company could be more suitable.

Skip hire

One of the most popular ways to manage waste during home improvement works is to hire a skip from your local waste disposal company. Whether you’re clearing a garden after a landscaping job or getting rid of the excess of an entire house renovation, a skip could be the perfect solution.

Throughout the project your skip can sit there, gathering waste, ready to be collected when the work is complete. You can put almost anything in a skip, but it’s always worth checking what materials your chosen skip hire company won’t take. Another thing to check is whether or not you need a skip permit. If you have plenty of private land this shouldn’t be a problem, but if your skip will have to go on a public road, discuss a skip permit with your skip company.

The benefits of skip hire are endless. They free up space during your renovation, you’ll save time going back and forth to the tip and you’ll be given a set price for all of your waste removal services. The three most important benefits, however, are:

  1. Convenience. Skips are hugely convenient. As described above, they act as a single waste disposal receptacle and you won’t need to sort through any of the waste yourself. Your skip hire company will collect the skip at a convenient time and dispose of its contents appropriately.

  1. Environmentally friendly. When your skip company disposes of the contents of your skip, they will do so responsibly, recycling as much waste as possible. Most companies recycle at least 95% of the waste they receive, minimising the amount of waste that goes to landfill.

  1. Flexible. With such a wide range of different skip sizes on offer, hiring a skip is ideal for any type of project. From the smallest 2 yard skips to much larger 16 yard skips, there is a skip for every home or garden renovation job. You can even hire skip bags, which are much more compact and ideal for small amounts of light materials, such as garden waste.

You might hire a skip if your home renovation is a DIY project or even if you’ve hired a construction company to complete the work. If you really want to keep on top of waste, doing the work yourself is probably the best option - depending on the scale of the work and your own skills, of course. There are a number of ways you can make a DIY job more professional such as hiring a mini digger or excavator.

Mini digger hire

With more people taking on their own renovation work, mini digger hire has become increasingly popular. When you do a job yourself, you run your own schedule and have complete transparency, however, you still need the quality construction products and machinery that a professional company would use in order to complete everything to the highest standard.

Mini diggers are particularly helpful for landscaping projects, for transporting materials across land or moving large or heavy objects across a site. Perhaps you’re installing a new patio in your garden and need to excavate the ground, or maybe you’ve ordered some heavy building materials to assist your home renovation project which you need to move.

Hiring a large piece of machinery like a digger may seem daunting. Of course, for a large scale renovation you can hire plant machinery along with an expert operator from most waste disposal companies. However, if you’re taking on a smaller project and you think you can ‘keep it in the family’, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t. Here are three important benefits of hiring a mini digger as a waste disposal solution:

  1. Versatile. Mini diggers have many different functions, bucket sizes and attachments. Whether you just need to dig up a small patch of your garden or excavate an entire plot using varied attachments, a mini digger can do this.

  1. Do it yourself. One of the best things about using a mini digger is that you won’t need any training to get into the driving seat. A digger should take just a few minutes to get to grips with and because they’re so easy to manoeuvre, you’ll soon feel like a pro. However, if you’re not totally confident, why not hire a larger digger along with a trained operator?

  1. Compact. Mini diggers make light work of light work. Their compact size makes them simple to manoeuvre and their flexible arm means that they can get into even the tightest nooks and crannies on your site. Their small size also means they are much less damaging than the larger alternatives and they are easy to transport, too.

With any of these three solutions or a combination of all three, you can save plenty of time and money on your upcoming home improvement or landscaping project. If you’re not sure where to start, the first thing to do is contact your local waste management company.
