A pile of home items

We all know that moving house is a huge task and one that takes careful planning to make the whole thing as stress-free as possible for everyone involved.

When it comes to packing up your possessions, it is likely that you will be stuck with lots of things that you would rather throw away. Having a big clear out means that possessions that have clogged up space for years can finally be thrown away so that you can start afresh in your new home with minimal clutter.

If this sounds like something you think might happen when you move home, it can be useful to know how to properly dispose of this waste. Everyone wants to cut down on costs as much as possible when moving house, therefore finding suitable and cost-effective waste disposal options is key.

Read on to find out more about disposing of your household waste in the most cost-effective way whilst moving house.

Hire a skip
When you move house, you might find that you’re lumped with a lot of items that are no longer useful to you. This might include old, tattered or outdated furniture, electronics or garden tools. It can, therefore, be difficult to know what to do with such items, particularly if you don’t live near a waste disposal centre or would find transporting such items difficult.
A skip can be a cost-effective option for waste removal as you won’t need to spend time or money transporting waste.
When you hire a skip from a reliable waste removal company, you can be sure that your waste is being managed in an environmentally friendly way.
With Graham Churchill, for example, our skip hire services aim to reduce our customers’ carbon footprint. We recycle as much of the waste as we can from the skip that you fill, meaning you can have peace of mind that your unwanted household belongings aren’t going straight to landfill.

Types of skip

The quantity of waste you can assume you might generate when moving house will reflect the size of skip you should look at hiring.
2 Yard Skips are generally the smallest size, which can hold about 20 bags of waste. Skips go up in sizes from there, the largest being a 12 Yard skip which can hold approximately 110 bags of waste.
Make sure you have enough room in your driveway or on the road near your house in order to hold the skip somewhere where you can easily transport the waste.

Many good skip hire companies will drop the skip to you and pick it up on the same day, so if you have already sorted and packed away the rubbish you’d like to skip, it can be quickly removed in time for your removals company to help you move house.

What can I put in a skip?

As a general rule, you can put most things in a skip.
Of course, there are exceptions including hazardous or harmful items which include; fridges, televisions, asbestos, computer monitors and paint. E-Waste, that is, any electrical item which has passed its useful life, can be disposed of using an e-waste disposal service. The parts can then safely and correctly be recycled.

Use a waste disposal company to recycle

We’re all constantly told the importance of recycling in the news and it should be a homeowners top priority when it comes to moving home. We are each responsible for the waste we produce and therefore cutting down on the amount of rubbish that goes to landfill is essential.
When decluttering your home, it can be easy to mindlessly throw items in the ‘general’ waste bin. However, it’s good to remember that recycling has never been easier. There are a number of council-run recycling schemes that encourage homeowners to segregate rubbish into different waste bins.
When moving house, it can be difficult to know what to do with such recyclable waste on a large scale, so looking for a reliable recycling company is highly beneficial.
From plastics to glass, metals and cardboard, lots of materials are recyclable so think carefully before disposing of an item.
If you have a number of items that are recyclable and that won’t fit in your house recycling boxes, consider getting in touch with a waste disposal company. From hiring a skip to offering collection of waste, they will be able to find the best solution for you to dispose of your waste.

Donate, donate, donate

We’ve all got unwanted or unworn clothes and brick-a-brack tucked away somewhere that has not had a purpose for a long time. Instead of throwing good quality clothing, toys or household items away, why not recycle it by taking it to your local charity shop, or donate unwanted books to your local library?
Some charity shops are furniture-specific and will just sell home items, so consider using them as a cheap option for getting rid of unwanted sofas, tables and chairs. As well as being a cost-effective option for your unwanted belongings, you’re helping a great cause.
Your unwanted items can be resold and given a new home and the proceeds will go to a cause in need. What’s not to love?

Sell unwanted items

Moving house is undoubtedly an expensive process, and selling your unwanted items can be a great way to add money into the kitty for things you might want to purchase for your new home.
A few weeks before moving out, why not start to sell items using online sites such as eBay, Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace or create a small yard sale in your front garden? You’d be surprised how much money you can make from unwanted belongings!

Tips for decluttering when moving house

As mentioned above, there are many different waste disposal options available when you move home. The key to choosing the right option is dependent on what items you need to get rid of and the most eco-friendly way of doing so.

When decluttering, ask yourself:

-      Do I need this item?

-      Is it sentimental?

-      Can it be sold?

-      Is it good quality, can it be donated?

Once you’ve decided on the best place for the item, it’s a good idea to segregate everything into sections depending on if the item is going; to charity, to be sold, to be kept or recycled.

Here are some other useful tips for decluttering your home:

●    Make sure you have labels, a pen and some large cardboard boxes handy in order to carefully organise your items.

●    Make a list of everything you aim to pack and tick them off your list as you go. For example, ‘bedroom items’, ‘kitchen utensils’ and ‘garden tools’.

●    When it comes to paper and any documents you no longer need, keep a shredder nearby to shred any out-of-date documents. This paper can then be recycled appropriately, and you can have peace of mind that any confidential information is destroyed.

●    Be realistic about what you aim to take to your next property. If there are items which have no sentimental value and have not been used in the last 12 months or so, consider if they will be used in your future home. Test electrical items to see if they are working and if not, evaluate whether or not you need them or are prepared to have them fixed.

●    Saving unused items can clutter up your new house, so think carefully before putting everything in the ‘keep’ pile. Letting go of clutter-filling items can reduce your moving costs because you won’t have to make repeat visits to collect all of your belongings.
