When school’s out for summer, the rubbish mounts up. More people are around the house so there’s more domestic waste, and it’s also the time of year when home improvements are popular. So, at some point in the summer, you are likely to hire a skip to get rid of all the rubbish that has mounted up.

Whatever you’re planning this summer, if you’re looking for skip hire services, then Graham Churchill Plant Ltd are the people to call. We can offer one day skip hire and a range of favourably priced options so you can keep the costs down. But before you book your skip hire, we thought we’d give you some good advice for recycling over the summer months so you can manage your waste better.

Recycle up to 60% of your household waste

Around 450 million tonnes of household waste is produced each year in the UK. We are improving at recycling but did you know that you can recycle up to 60% of the waste you produce at home?

Domestic and construction waste

Here are some ethical ways to improve your waste management so you can cut down on what ends up in landfill:

  • Don’t shop when you’re hungry – Around 7.2 million tonnes of food gets thrown out every year, which equates to about £12 billion. Gone off, left uneaten or not flavour of the month, food is one of the biggest forms of waste. Draw up a shopping list and measure portions, and don’t shop when you’re starving! You’ll spend more than you intended and buy things you don’t need.
  • Go greener – Raw food, such as fruit and vegetables, plus their skins can be placed in a compost bin in your garden. They’ll then decompose into nutritious food for your plants and flowers. This way you give something back to your garden (and you cut down on waste)
  • Separate glass, plastics, paper and card – Keep your recyclables away from your other waste and make sure they don’t end up with your skip waste. This makes it easier for your local council to dispose of and you can ask them for a proper bin to keep these in.
  • Hire a Skip for your DIY waste – If you’re carrying out any DIY this summer, then you’ll be looking for skip hire companies and Graham Churchill Plant should be top of your list. Not only will we ensure that your waste is dealt with in the most sustainable manner possible, it will also mean you don’t have to go to huge amounts of trouble trying to find the best way to dispose of it or driving back and forward to the local tip.
