When working on a domestic project, it’s inevitable that you’re going to produce a substantial amount of waste. Whether you’re planning a kitchen refit, a full-scale home renovation or simply a garden clear out, enlisting the services of professional waste disposal experts is often the most cost-effective and efficient solution for managing your waste. Your chosen waste management company can provide you with the ideal skip for your needs, and then collect and dispose of the waste responsibly at a time that suits you.

If you’re planning on hiring a skip for your upcoming domestic project, there are a number of things you’ll need to consider. Here at Graham Churchill, we provide expert skip hire and waste removal services to both commercial and domestic customers, so we know everything there is to know about waste management using skips. Below, we answer all of your pressing questions about hiring a skip for your upcoming domestic project.

Do I need skip hire?

Before hiring a skip, it’s worth knowing the benefits of skip hire and whether it’s a suitable option for your project. It predominantly depends on the size of your project and how much waste you think you might produce. Even if you’re planning a small landscaping job, skip hire may still be justified.

Skip hire is simply the most efficient option when it comes to waste disposal- if you take on the job yourself, you’ll be shuttling back and forth between your home and the local recycling centre, which will not only cost you time and money, but also have a negative impact on the environment. Furthermore, when you rely on the experts, you can guarantee that your waste will be disposed of responsibly and reused where possible.

Aside from efficiency, another benefit of skip hire is the variety of options that are available. You can hire a skip for a long period of time, no matter how long your project runs for. Most companies offer a set price for a set period of time, and then if the rental extends beyond this, you’ll be expected to pay additional fees per week. On the other hand, if you simply need a skip for one day, most reputable companies offer same day skip hire. This allows you to load your waste into the skip, and your skip hire company will come and collect it that same day; you won’t have a bulky skip taking up valuable space on your drive or road for weeks on end!

Skips are hugely beneficial for domestic renovation projects because they can handle large volumes of mixed waste. Even with a keen eye for construction, it can be extremely difficult to estimate exactly how much waste your project is going to produce and there’s nothing worse than finishing a job, only to find that you can’t quite fit all your rubbish into your car. With skip hire, your contractor will help you to choose the perfect size skip for the job at hand, allowing for any unexpected amounts of waste which will inevitably build up.

What types of skips are available?

With skip hire, there are a wide range of choices available to you. The first decision you’ll need to make is to choose the right sized skip for your project. This will involve a spot of guess work, however your building contractors and skip hire specialist should be able to give you a helping hand in estimating the amount of waste you’ll produce, and therefore what size skip you need. Skips generally range between 2 yards to 12 yards; let’s take a look at the standard skip sizes available:

●    2 yard skip: can hold approximately 20 bin bags worth of waste and is ideal for small house or garden jobs. A two yard skip is also known as a mini skip.

●    4 yard skip: can hold approximately 35 bin bags and is ideal for collecting waste produced during kitchen and bathroom refits.

●    6 yard skip: can hold approximately 55 bin bags and is a good option if you have bulky waste, such as construction waste, furniture or garden waste.

●    8 yard skip: can hold approximately 70 bin bags and is the largest size skip available for holding heavy waste. An 8 yard skip is also known as a builder’s skip.

●    12 yard skip: can hold approximately 110 bin bags and is ideal for large house clearances where you’ll be filling it with lots of large bulky furniture.

When filling a skip, it’s also important to remember that the load must be level. It’s always a good idea to hire a larger skip than you need in order to allow for this.

Along with the size of the skip itself, you’ll also need to consider the weight of your skip. Waste can generally be separated into two categories- light and heavy waste. For most domestic projects, you won’t produce much heavy waste, as this tends to consist of construction waste generated in large commercial projects. Generally, the maximum weight for a builder’s skip (or 8 yard skip) is 8 tonnes, however it’s unlikely that you’ll reach this during a home renovation job. Just be sure to check with your chosen skip hire company if they have any weight restrictions, and ask for advice about how to keep things under the maximum weight.

As well as a range of skip sizes, skips are also available with plenty of different features and configurations. For example, if you’re concerned about fly tipping or you simply want to keep your waste covered up, an enclosed skip is a great option. Equally, if you’ve got particularly heavy waste or you struggle with lifting and carrying, you could opt for a drop door skip. If you don’t think that a small amount of waste will justify hiring an entire skip, many skip hire companies also rent out hippo bags; compact and more lightweight alternatives to skips.

Whatever type of skip you decide upon, you may need to invest in a skip permit. If you don’t have space for your skip on your private land and you need to place it on the public road outside of your property, you’ll need to speak to your skip hire company about obtaining and skip licence. In most cases, it will be free and they will be able to arrange it for you.

What can I put in a skip?

When you hire a skip, it’s essential that you know what you can and can’t put into it. Generally, you can put any type of domestic waste into your skip. If you’re clearing out, you’re free to load it up with furniture and textiles, or, if you’re landscaping your garden, green garden waste and light garden building materials are permitted. For a domestic building or renovation project, most of the construction waste will be able to be put into your skip, including rubble, wood and metal.

However, there are some items that may not be permitted by your chosen skip hire company- it’s essential that you speak to them and find out what they’re willing to collect. Whilst it does vary, most companies won’t accept:

●    Asbestos

●    WEEE - TVs, computer monitors, fridges

●    Plasterboard and gypsum

●    Tyres

●    Batteries

●    Fluorescent tubes

●    Solvents

●    Fuels

●    Cans of paint

●    Electricals

●    Gas cylinders

●    Medical waste

Whilst these items may be prohibited, it does of course depend on the skip hire company. Some will have special licences for managing certain types of waste, such as asbestos or WEEE.

Is professional waste removal eco-friendly?

Whether you’re an extremely environmentally conscious person or you simply want to reduce your carbon footprint throughout your upcoming renovation project, opting to work with a professional waste removal service is a great way to ensure the process is more eco-friendly. By nature, skip hire companies are recycling experts; they have sites solely dedicated to effectively sorting and recycling all types of waste. Most companies also have a recycling policy that ensures that the majority of the waste collected is recycled.

Rather than playing a guessing game when you get to the recycling centre, trying to work out which items and materials go where, why not hand over the responsibility to the professionals? You’ll not only guarantee that the waste will be disposed of correctly, but also minimise your own carbon footprint by not having to drive back and forth between your property and the local tip. Your skip company will collect your waste in one round trip, reducing the amount of time spent on the road.
