How You Can Cut Down Food Waste At Home

Food waste

Most people living in Britain today live in a world is cheap, abundant and always available. Unfortunately, the world in which we live is sadly very wasteful when it comes it making and consuming food, as a huge proportion of it is wasted. Agriculture takes up huge stretches of land on the Earth and, though necessary, does do damage to the planet. When there are people around the world still starving, it is certainly terrible that so much food is going straight into landfill. Because of this, it is very important that we take personal responsibility for how we use our food and try and minimalise wastage where possible. Many leading political figures have tried to encourage us to do this, including London Mayor Sadiq Khan last year.

The primary causes of waste occur when;

●    Food rots during transportation

●    Foods past their use-by dates are thrown away by both shops

●    Foods past their use-by dates are thrown away by us at home. (This kind of waste is the greatest percentage of food wasted in the UK.)

●    Prepared food that is binned

●    Fruit and vegetables that don’t meet our unnatural standards of physical appearance (between 20% and 40%) are thrown away before even leaving the farm.

We can definitely do our share of trying to cut down on our own personal food waste by doing the following things:

●    Don’t overbuy food

●    Plan your food

●    Use your freezer

●    Make soup

●    Double check use-by dates of fresh food before you purchase

●    Realise that use-by dates are just advice
