Northamptonshire people are recycling more than ever with over 50% of their household waste now being recycled. If you are an avid recycler and care deeply about your effect on the planet, maybe you should try upcycling?

What Is Upcycling?

Upcycling is a process where waste materials, by-products and broken objects are transformed into new useful objects. Avid upcyclers refer to conventional recycling as ‘downcycling’, as this process breaks down objects and materials into things of lesser quality. The vast majority of recycling is made up of converting the waste back into the raw materials from which the original product was manufactured. This is also known as ’creative reuse’.

The Benefits Of Upcycling

The benefits of upcycling, as opposed to conventional recycling, are many. The energy and effort used to collect and transform waste into another useful object are far lower with upcycling as less transport and fewer laborious processes are involved. The complicated manufacturing in the production of a modern object from its many recycled base materials also uses lots of energy, as do even more transportation of different materials to factories, and then retailers. As most of the energy that we currently produce is from polluting fossil fuels that often need to be mined in environmentally destructive practices, there are significant impacts felt by the planet even with conventional recycling.
